One of the stud bolts that holds the exhaust in place is sheared off inside the engine block. It would likely not be too difficult to extract, IF I could actually get to it, which I cannot. There is a metal bracket in the way which I thought was part of the kickstand frame, but I learned is welded to the engine mount and cannot be easily unbolted and moved out of the way. I started to dismantle, thought better of it, and quit for hops and contemplation.

Should I embark on a significant breakdown of the vehicle? Pay someone else to fix it? Dump it on craigslist? I don’t know when it is time to quit on a project. But along with some bad news I got today, my inability to repair the exhaust has me down.

Any chance you could somehow contain liquid in the hole? Assuming it’s an aluminum block and steel stud that’s broken off this may work for you.

Can it be removed by inverting the bike?

Or reached with some contact adhesive in a stick?

I hope the bad news wasn’t too serious or too bad fella.

You are only beaten when you decide to give up.

Welcome to Piaggio! Take three things apart to get to the thing you need to fix! Personally I wouldn’t spend money on a modern frame, I would find a Stella (really a Bajaj reworked by Genuine) with the 5 port reed valve Bajaj engines and put my effort into that. You get the classic large frame with an updated engine that was sold in the USA. It will always be worth something and has the classic feel.

You are never beaten. You may give up for the day, but even that is progress. For that which totally fucked you today, had to do it at some point.

Buy a different Chinese scooter, ride it until the important stuff falls off, scrap it and get another.

Or get a classic Vespa with a proper steel frame and actual gears and ride that. Dumping money into that twist and go is a silly idea.

You never give up. Especially when it costs too much.

I count paying someone as not giving up.

Best to just sleep on it. I’m on day three of my oil cooler replacment on my S8 so I feel you’re pain.

Day one put in 3 hours or more and just got some hoses off and found out that I didn’t think I had enough room to extricate the bolts for the alternator, but maybe there is a way without taking off the nose of the car.... there isnt, so I spent day two figuring that out and finally coming to terms with having to take off the bumper cover and the radiator and the fans... but by the end of day two I was beaten and frustrated with the thought I had jammed the alternator in place and that it wouldn’t ever come out. I was thinking how I could button this up to send it off on a flatbed, so yeah it wasn’t a good day two. On to day three. I new I needed to pull the radiator and the fans, for those off without too much hassle and got back to the alternator and finally got it out too... victory is within sight. Then I forgot my triple square bits at home, so had to run back and grab them. But got the alternator bracket off and the oil cooler replaced, that was the easiest part, and he reason for all the other stuff to come off. But now the alternator and the serp belt are all back together, the fans are in and ready to reinstall the radiator, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but had t get back home to the boys and momma, so should be able to wrap it up next time out. But I was ready to give up after day two, glad I didn’t though.

So give it some time, take a day off and get back to it with fresh eyes. If you have to totally strip it down, it can’t be too terribly bad to do so. Either way, good luck.
